Meet the Intern – Tom

by Aigner/Prensky Staff on January 25, 2012

Hello all, you can rest easy tonight because Tom the intern has come to continue the running series of “Meet the Intern” blog posts at Aigner/Prensky Marketing! My name is Tom Chen and I’ve already been here for about a week or so, but I’m still recovering from the flood of things I’ve had to adapt to. I’ve worked a few internships before, some in marketing and some not, but I’ve never seen a workplace as bustling as Aigner/Prensky Marketing has been this past week. It’s great to be a part of a group of people that really sink their teeth into their work and chug through anything that comes at them.

But, I suppose I shouldn’t rave about this place in a blog post that’s supposed to be about me, so let’s talk “Tom” for a bit.

I’m a faithful student at Boston’s own Boston University and I’m working on my degree in English, but I’m dabbling in and out of a bunch of careers just to test the waters. If all goes well, in a few years I should be well on my way to writing the next great American novel! Look forward to it folks. But in all seriousness, I’m an avid writer and I love creative writing. It’s my personal goal to write a great published piece. I’ve got a few things in the works I like, but it remains to be seen whether other people like it to.

I love vocabulary words and I’m constantly trying to extend my vocabulary. If you’re looking for a great way to do this yourself, I recommend Anu Garg’s www.wordsmith.org. Anu is a master of words and has written tomes on anagrams and funky words you’ve never heard of. I suppose you could say he has an argosy of insight into the English language.

Anyway, thanks for giving me a listen. I’m looking forward to doing more for Aigner/Prensky Marketing and I hope I can learn more about this field and the great people that work in it. Hopefully, I won’t slow down this train of a business. Stay tuned for more.

~ Tom

A Glitch in the Matrix

by Aigner/Prensky Staff on January 23, 2012

So there’s this thread on Reddit called “Tell me your ‘Glitch in the Matrix’ stories”, and it’s great. Here’s the premise: if you saw the first Matrix movie, there was a scene where Neo (Keanu Reeves in sunglasses) sees a black cat pass him, then sees the same black cat pass him again. Some other character that I don’t remember explains that Deja-vu is actually the Matrix changing something, so it “glitches”. So the thread is basically people telling stories about weird stuff that’s happened to them that seems like “a glitch in the Matrix”. At some points it devolves into people talking about ghosts or someone claiming to be psychic, but the other stories are pretty interesting and just the right amount of creepy.

My “glitch in the Matrix” story is unbelievably goofy, but I’ll tell it to anyone who listens. My first summer home from college I told my friends about this movie called “Santa’s Slay”. It’s a christmas slasher that is one of those horror movies made bad on purpose. It stars an ex-wrestler who plays a murderous santa. I actually mentioned it in my Christmas Movie Picks blog post. So, it’s July and my friend finds a copy of the DVD for a couple bucks in a Blockbuster bin. He calls me up, and we rally in his basement and watch it. It’s pretty hilarious, and I shut the dvd player off. Instead of shutting off, the movie starts over again. Confused, I hit the power button again, but that makes the DVD player turn on again. I realize that I did actually shut it off, and Santa’s Slay is playing on cable, and had started playing at the exact instant I hit the button to shut it off.

It was the middle of summer, and a christmas slasher started playing exactly after we had watched it on DVD. What are the odds of that ever happening? My friend had randomly found a movie I had referenced months, and we watch it, and it plays exactly from the beginning on cable as soon as we finish it? At one point my friend got up to take a phone call, so we paused it. If that hadn’t happened, I would have shut the DVD player off and it would have been some commercial and I would have just shut the TV off.

The coincidence is mind-boggling. It’s like hitting the lottery on the stupidest thing I could ever imagine. It’s like fate has the worst sense of humor. I was freaking out, but none of my friends ever really acted surprised. I even thought they were playing some super elaborate and super subtle prank on me, but it seemed too well-timed and too smart for my dimwit friends. I wish I could do the math to see what the probability is of these events transpiring exactly how they did, but I’m pretty bad at math.

How does SOPA affect you?

by Aigner/Prensky Staff on January 19, 2012

There has been a lot of buzz recently around SOPA or the Stop Online Piracy Act. The companies that support this act are TV, movie and music industries. The people who are against it includes pretty much every member of the general public who does not want their current internet freedom to be controlled. Censorship of the web is a HOT topic and we are interested to know what you think?

We came across this great article on CNET on the FAQ’s of how SOPA would affect you – so tell us what is your opinion?

Midnight in Paris

January 4, 2012

Today, I have chosen to write about my new favorite movie “Midnight in Paris”. It was released this year and stars Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson. Of course Owen is perfect at playing a hopeless romantic who is trying to be a writer. He is in love with the idea of the 1920’s era in [...]
