Goodbye Nicole!

Last Week at Aigner/Prensky Marketing!

When I first learned that I would be interning here at Aigner/Prensky Marketing this past winter, I was excited, yet incredibly anxious. I knew that unlike most of the classes I had taken at Suffolk, while they were very informative and educational, this would be the real deal. I was actually taking the next step. I knew that this internship would make me uncomfortable for awhile, but I was looking forward to that day when I was finally able to feel like I knew what I was doing (at least most of it…).  I can safely say, with one more day here, that I no longer feel anxious about the work that I’ve been doing for the company. I’ve gained not only extremely valuable public relations experience, but other life experience that I feel is just as important.

A Surprising Outcome…

I can honestly say that transferring from the University of New Hampshire to Suffolk University was one of the best decisions I’ve made… ever! Moving to Boston has brought me out of my shell. It’s still there, but I only crawl back inside every once in a while now. Being able to choose from different majors within the Communications department at Suffolk pointed me in the right direction. With graduation looming in the not so distance, city living has forced me to take charge of my life. If someone who knew me when I was in middle school were to bump into me on the street passing by and strike up a conversation, I’m pretty sure they would be amazed at the difference. That’s if they remembered me at all. Let’s just say I wasn’t the most outspoken person in school. As the oldest of my siblings, I was forced to experience everything first, which can be a pretty big task to undertake if you come from a sheltered family. Sure, joining the Track and Field team in high school helped me make friends, but living in Boston I was able to make friends without the security of being part of a team.

I’m Movin’ On!

As much as I would like to remain in school for oh, say, another ten years so I can avoid the real world, I am also excited to start something new. Like no homework. I went home last weekend and hung out with one of my younger sisters (who is still in high school) and was almost shocked when she said she had homework to do and I realized that for the first time in about sixteen years I didn’t have any. Talk about a wake up call! I actually felt old! I wonder if that’s how my parents felt when they realized their oldest daughter was graduating from college…

The dreaded job search is my only homework for the immediate future. Besides that, I’m actually looking forward to my first summer as a college graduate, not worrying about school in the fall. I can finally say that I’m done!

Get Your Rear in Gear!

by Aigner/Prensky Staff on May 15, 2012

This week has been Super-Deluxe!

The non-profit organization that I am a part of, The Colon Cancer Coalition hit a major milestone! After a highly successful 2011 ‘Get Your Rear in Gear’ 5K road race, we raised over $140,000 for the organization to support colon cancer awareness and ultimately prevention. This past weekend, we saw the fruits of our labor as we gave away a whopping $93,500 to the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers.

It was an incredible feeling, getting up there in front of a few hundred people dressed in our Sunday best receiving a standing ovation from the crowd! I was all smiles! Who would have ever thought that back when we started organizing this race, that it would turn out so well?! When Brian, my race co-chair and I began to plan this race, we weren’t sure what to expect. Neither of us had organized and event this big, and to top it off, we barely ran or even jogged occasionally! The Colon Cancer Coalition had even warned us, that most first year races don’t make any money the first year – and if we broke even, we could call that a success.

The national organization had teamed us up randomly as we were both passionate about the cause. Brian’s brother in law was diagnosed with colon cancer at a young age and through very intense treatments is now a survivor. My father was also diagnosed at the young age of 35, when I was 7 and passed away when I was 13. Although my story doesn’t have the happy ending I had hoped for, 13 years later I feel as if I am finally settling the score a bit. Nothing will replace having my dad around, but it sure lessens the blow by being able to be a vessel of positive change.

$93,500 dollars worth of positive change to be exact!

All the time we had spent distributing flyers, working with the media, with running groups, soliciting donations and grants – it had all paid off! We saw the return on race day 100 times over. There was a lot of laughing, a lot of cheering, and a  little crying too! We created the best support group for those fighting the disease, we honored those who had passed, and we never stopped celebrating our survivors!

We are back again for 2012 – with a lot of motivation and even more goals to make this race bigger and better! Hope you join us on Saturday, October 13th as we stand up to this disease again! I don’t doubt for second that we are on to something incredibly great! Click here to sign up! And visit our blog at www.BostonGYRIG.tumblr.com for up to the minute details on all things race related!

Boston Road Race Funds First Colon Cancer Educational Program for Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers

Colon Cancer Coalition Presents $93,500 Check to League Raised From the Inaugural Get Your Rear in Gear 5K

The Colon Cancer Coalition presented the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers with a check for $93,500 to create the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers Colon Cancer Screening & Education Program (CCSEP). This program is the first of its kind for the League, addressing needs related to colon cancer screenings and treatment not covered by insurance for those affected by this disease in Massachusetts.

Representatives from both organizations were on-site at The Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis today, to officially announce this new partnership.

(Pictured left to right) William J. Halpin, Jr., Board Chair Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, Caitlin M. Gambee, Boston Get Your Rear in Gear Co-Chair, Brian Shelly, Boston Get Your Rear in Gear Co-Chair,  James W. Hunt, Jr., President & CEO Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, Cheryl Shaughnessy, Membership Services Director Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers

“We are very grateful to the local Get Your Rear in Gear affiliate for their generous donation,” said James W. Hunt, Jr, president and CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers. “This funding will not only help  increase awareness among our patients about the importance of colon cancer screening and treatment, it will go far in breaking down some of the financial barriers that prevent patients from accessing the kinds of preventive services which are critical to their long-term health.”

The Colon Cancer Screening & Education Program (CCSEP) represents the first-ever League funding initiative whereby health center patients receive direct help with covering expenses related to colon cancer screening and treatment which are not reimbursable through health insurance.

Community health center patients face a distinct set of challenges in accessing health care; ninety percent of our patients have incomes below 200% of the federal poverty level, leaving them with limited resources to pay for insurance deductibles and co-pays, as well as child care, transportation and other costs associated with screening and treatment.  The primary mission of the League and health centers is to work to eliminate barriers to care for the vulnerable populations we serve; this funding will aid us in these efforts by allowing health center physicians to provide targeted financial assistance to patients on a case-by-case basis.  Eligible expenses include:

  • Pre- and post- colonoscopy prep products and medications,
  • Transportation to and from procedures,
  • Translations services needed during procedures,
  • Co-pays and deductibles,
  • Cost of diagnostics resulting from screening, ie: removal of polyps, and
  • Cost of ancillary services needed to support patient through colon cancer treatment, i.e.:
    • Day care expenses,
    • Meal expenses,
    • Home care expenses, and
    • Medication expenses.

All funds for this program were raised from the 2011 Boston Get Your Rear in Gear 5K. This was the inaugural race for the Colon Cancer Coalition in Massachusetts and one of the largest first year races on the east coast. The 2012 race is on October 13, 2012 at Castle Island in South Boston.

“We are proud to work with the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers to create this program,” said Brian Shelly, Boston Get Your Rear in Gear Race Co-Chair. “We are excited to know that those confronted with a colon cancer diagnosis now have monetary resources available to help with treatment and other related expenses. Education and prevention are key with this disease, we are glad that the funds raised at the race can make such a positive impact on Massachusetts.”

About the Colon Cancer Coalition / Get Your Rear in Gear:

Get Your Rear in Gear events are presented nationally by the Colon Cancer Coalition, a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis. The events are 100% volunteer-driven in communities throughout the United States. To date the Colon Cancer Coalition has distributed nearly $1.25 million from the Get Your Rear in Gear events back into local communities for colon cancer education, prevention, and screening. By making the words colon, colorectal and colonoscopy a part of the everyday language, we believe we can overcome the fear and decrease deaths from this largely preventable cancer. A history of the organization, upcoming events, and a list of programs receiving funding from the Colon Cancer Coalition can be found at GetYourRearinGear.com.

About The Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers:

The Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (“the League”) is a non-profit, statewide association representing and serving the needs of the state’s 50 community health center organizations, which provide primary and preventive care to some 800,000 residents.  Funding for League initiatives comes from a variety of sources, including local, state and federal grants, as well as private foundations, corporations and other non-profit organizations. The League uses this funding to provide a broad range of technical assistance to our community health center members, including recruitment of clinicians, information technology development, clinical and administrative staff training, and management of quality care initiatives across all health centers.

Meet the Intern – Bridgett

by Aigner/Prensky Staff on May 14, 2012

Hi everyone, my name is Bridgett Ko and I am currently an undergraduate student at Boston University. I am pursuing a degree in Public Relations as well as a minor in Psychology. I originally discovered my PR niche with my first PR internship during my senior year of high school. This was when I found my passion for the event planning and social media aspect of the Public Relations industry. Since my time here in Boston, I knew that I wanted the opportunity to continue my learning through real world experience and what better way than to learn from the professionals themselves here at the Aigner/Prensky Marketing Group.

So a little about me. Besides the whole event coordinating aspect, I have a strong passion for food and fashion. Which is why I am excited to help the A/P team with their new division, Food Truck Festivals of New England! I’m also guilty of spending too much time on various social media sites reading up on the latest updates in the fashion and food worlds.  I also love art- for a moment I had my heart set on being a fashion designer, I know it’s cliché but I have to admit, I may still want to. I also enjoy dancing and working with children. After years of babysitting and working at a daycare, my love for them is still here, and I currently teach ballet to 2-5 year olds.

So whether I am experimenting in the kitchen or here at A/P, I always try give my best because if you don’t, why waste your time in the first place?

As one of my favorite artists, Andy Warhol states, “You have to be willing to get happy about nothing.”

The College Bucket List

April 30, 2012

“College senior”  – the phrase makes a few things come to mind:  Going out.  Living it up.  Friends.  Parties.  Late night food.  Sleeping in.  Class? – Yes, that’s why we’re here.  Then rinse, repeat.  But there is one more thing that comes to mind, something that is constantly buried deep, deep down in every college [...]

Smells Like a New Car!

April 27, 2012

I’ve finally traded in the used car my parent gave me when I went off to College and, in some ways, now feel like a real grown-up. I didn’t get too fancy, just opted for a new Toyota Carolla (did splurge for the S class however), trading in my beat-up, struggling, ’99 Camry. Additionally, this [...]
